Mauro Belcastro, L’azione predestinante di Dio nell’epistola ai Romani: (pre-) determinazione e libertà divina davanti all’impossibilità umana

L’interesse nel mostrare il legame tra il divino e l’umano e la specifica via della sua relazione è ben espresso dall’uso che Paolo fa del verbo προορίζω (predestinare). Alcuni passaggi chiave della Lettera ai Romani mostrano come l’azione predesti- nante di Dio nei confronti dell’umanità sia il suo specifico e libero modo di far fronte all’irriducibile debolezza umana. L’agire predeterminante di Dio esprime una duplice realtà: da una parte è la scoperta paolina di un’azione divina che permea tutte le cose e implica, sollecita e determina l’agire umano; dall’altra è l’espressione più alta della sua libertà che si manifesta nel compimento della vi- cenda del Messia Gesù.

Mauro Belcastro, The Pre-destining Action of God in the Epistle to the Romans: (Pre-)Determination and the Freedom of God vis-à-vis Human Impossibility

The use which Paul makes of the verb προορίζω (to predestine) shows his interest in highlighting the tie between the Divine and the Human and the specific way of its relationship. Some key passages in the Epistle to the Romans show how the predestining action of God towards Humanity is His specific and free way to confront irreducible human frailty. The predetermining action of God ex- presses a double reality: on the one hand it is the Pauline discovery of a divine action which permeates all things and involves, stimulates and determines human acting; on the other hand it is the highest expression of His freedom, which reveals itself in the accomplishment of the event of Jesus the Messiah.

Il libretto dello Stiffelio di Piave, a monte degli interventi della censura triestina del 1850, che mascherò gli espliciti richiami al protestantesimo e impose una nuova scena finale sconnessa dal resto dell’azione e del tutto banale, ha mantenuto e valorizzato il culmine dell’azione drammatica in una parola di perdono, nella “casuale” lettura di una parola di Gesù. La consapevolezza del retroterra protestante della vicenda, messa in scena nella singolare opera che è lo Stiffelio, è rilevante non solo per lo spettatore italiano, ma anche per chi deve curarne l’allestimento scenico.

The Libretto of Stiffelio by Piave, before the action of the Censure in Trieste in 1850, which masked the explicit references to Protestantism and imposed a new final scene, disconnected from the rest of the action and altogether banal, has kept and brought out the acme of the dramatic action in a word of forgiveness, in the “casual” reading of a word by Jesus. The consciousness of the Protestant background of the story staged in the peculiar opera Stiffelio, is relevant not only for an Italian spectator, but also for the person who must undertake the scenic setting.

Two texts by Barth, recently re-published, which marked deeply the ecclesiastical situation in the Thirties of the last century, still have a great value in the approach, for the lucidity with which the position of the Church is formulated vis-à-vis ideologies and facing the continuous necessity of reformation. The collection of the autobiographical writings, which appeared every ten years between 1938 and 1958, are now added to these.
